Backing the Senate’s Cybersecurity Work

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee this afternoon will mark up the bipartisan cybersecurity legislation that Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and Ranking Member John Thune, R-S.D., put forward last week.  ITI today sent the senators a letter outlining our support for the bill’s direction, especially its focus on technology neutrality and the importance of cyber protections that are based on innovation.  We are urging that, as the process moves forward, the sponsors continue to focus on key principles:

  • Leveraging public-private partnerships and building upon existing initiatives and resource commitments, rather than regulatory, top-down approaches;
  • Facilitating swift private and public sector response and adaptation to emerging threats through the development and adoption of new security technologies;
  • Properly reflecting the borderless, interconnected, and global nature of today’s cyber environment (including global standards development); and,
  • Basing policies on risk management and directly focusing on bad actors and their threats.

Read the full letter here, and check back for updates as the legislation moves through the Senate.
